Through this poem Rosalia de Castro put stress on the importance of natural world. Actually, Castro is a Spanish writer and they are highly influenced the people of their culture. Originally this poem was written in Galician language,   a part of Spain. It’s original name is “Dicen que no hablan las plants”

Here in this poem Castro strongly believe that every person should have connect with nature they should have to listen nature instead of for artificially

Brief Summery - They Say That The Plants Do Not Speak

In this poem rosalia declares that normally people believe that plant do not speak but poet is strongly says that they are wrong

Protesting them Castro say that I have heard their talk about me. Castro says that they were talking that look at that women she is dreaming about eternal of spring of life and Fields but yet she will have gray hair very soon and will be frozen over the grass and frost will cover her

In the next stanza She found herself in the same situation but something is different. Grey hair are on her head, and also the frost is  on the loan but she is not pressed under the Frost but she is pressed under the poor dreaming and incredible sleep. she is dreaming that the eternal spring of life is going an also perennial freshness of field and soul are not there they are scorching and also himself other.

Hidden Meaning of the poem - They Say That The Plants Do Not Speak

Here in this poem Castro personifies plants while criticizing the notion held by people about the plant. To the people only human beings and animals can alter sounds and words from mouth. On this belief of the people see ironically goes against the law of order. And she says –

“ So they say: but one cannot be sure,

for always when I go by,

They whisper about me and say”

Actually in this poem Castro gives human character and ability to plant to speak up their mind. In fact the plants are symbol of her inner most fear of her old age. The plants criticizes her as she passed it.

She declares that one cannot move through life without this beautiful greenery. It bothers her that people disregard the aesthetics of the outdoors and can’t see that life coincides with it. Having one and not the other is something so impossible to her to understand. Nature is an ongoing cycle and Castro states that it’s “the eternal spring of life”. The wildlife has a past and it should be the practicality of life.

Overall De Castro wants to see the positives of nature but cant help herself from seeing the negatives. However, she realizes that she cannot live without nature. “Stars and fountains and flowers, don’t murmur against my dreams; could I delight in you without them, without them, could I live?” This quote shows how important nature is to De Castro

Simple Meaning of the poem - They Say That The Plants Do Not Speak

Rosalia De Castro says that in the poem the people say that the plants can not speak  with stream  not with Birds not with roaring waves not with brilliance of stars.

They people say I cannot sure because when I go by them (the plants) they always talk with each other about me that  - ‘oh! that made women goes. She is dreaming about the spring tide and eternal fields and life. Yet very soon her hair will be turn in grey color. Very Soon See will be found  trembling and frozen and the frost cover her upon the grass’

Now there are grey hair on my head. There is frost on the loan but I drew on dreaming of poor and incurable sleep. And in dream of permanent freshness of the field and soul. Some dreams are scorching me some were scorched by himself

Poem:

They Say That The Plants Do Not Speak

They say that the plants do not speak, not the brooks, nor the birds,
Nor the waves with their roar, not with their brilliance the stars,
So they say: but one cannot be sure, for always when I go by,
They whisper about me and say
"Ah, there goes the madwoman, dreaming,
Of the everlasting springtide of life and the fields,
And yet soon, very son, her hair will be grey,
And trembling, frozen, she sees that the frost is upon the grass
There are gray hairs in my head, there is frost on the lawns,
But I press on dreaming, poor, incurable somnambulist,
With the eternal spring of life that goes
And the perennial freshness of the fields and souls,
Although some were scorched and although others scorch.
Stars and fountains and flowers, will not murmur of my dreams,
Without them, neither can one admire - nor can one live without them.
