Hidden Meaning of the poem - They Say That The Plants Do Not Speak

  Here in this poem Castro personifies plants while criticizing the notion held by people about the plant. To the people only human beings and animals can alter sounds and words from mouth. On this belief of the people see ironically goes against the law of order. And she says –

       “ So they say: but one cannot be sure,

         for always when I go by,

        They whisper about me and say”

        Actually in this poem Castro gives human character and ability to plant to speak up their mind. In fact the plants are symbol of her inner most fear of her old age. The plants criticizes her as she passed it.

She declares that one cannot move through life without this beautiful greenery. It bothers her that people disregard the aesthetics of the outdoors and can’t see that life coincides with it. Having one and not the other is something so impossible to her to understand. Nature is an ongoing cycle and Castro states that it’s “the eternal spring of life”. The wildlife has a past and it should be the practicality of life.

Overall De Castro wants to see the positives of nature but cant help herself from seeing the negatives. However, she realizes that she cannot live without nature. “Stars and fountains and flowers, don’t murmur against my dreams; could I delight in you without them, without them, could I live?” This quote shows how important nature is to De Castro

  They people say I cannot sure because when I go by them (the plants) they always talk with each other about me that  - ‘oh! that made women goes. She is dreaming about the spring tide and eternal fields and life. Yet very soon her hair will be turn in grey color. Poem:

They Say That The Plants Do Not Speak

They say that the plants do not speak, not the brooks, nor the birds,
Nor the waves with their roar, not with their brilliance the stars,
So they say: but one cannot be sure, for always when I go by,
They whisper about me and say
"Ah, there goes the madwoman, dreaming,
Of the everlasting springtide of life and the fields,
And yet soon, very son, her hair will be grey,
And trembling, frozen, she sees that the frost is upon the grass
There are gray hairs in my head, there is frost on the lawns,
But I press on dreaming, poor, incurable somnambulist,
With the eternal spring of life that goes
And the perennial freshness of the fields and souls,
Although some were scorched and although others scorch.
Stars and fountains and flowers, will not murmur of my dreams,
Without them, neither can one admire - nor can one live without them.

Writer’s Name: Edgar Albert Guest

Date of Publication:  13 March 2017

Think sunshine all the day;
Refuse to let the trifling worries stay,
Crowd them with thoughts of laughter from your mind.
Think of the good, forget the bad you find,
Think of the sun behind the clouds; the blue
And not the gray skies that you view.
Think of the kindness not the meanness shown,
The true friends not the false ones you have known;
The joy and not the hatred of the strife,
The sweetness not the bitterness of life.
Think happy thoughts!
Think happy thoughts!
Think always of the best,

Think of the ones you love, not those that you detest;
Think of your victories and not your failures here,
The smile that pleased and not the hurtful sneer,
The kindly word and not the harsh word spoken,
The promise kept and not the promise broken;
The good that you have known and not the bad,
The happy days that were and not the sad;
Think of the rose and not the withered flower,
The beauty of the rainbow, not the shower.
Think happy thoughts!
Think happy thoughts!
This is true happiness!

That life is sad that feeds on its distress;
That mind is gloomy that subsists on gloom,
And is as dismal as a curtained room,
Where daily comes the sunshine, but to find
It cannot enter through the close-drawn blind.
Fling up the curtains of your mind today
And let the morning sunshine in to play;
Dwell on the joys and not the sorrows here,
Master your thoughts and you have mastered fear.
Think happy thoughts.
